Sunday Morning Adventure
Sunday School: Birth-Kindergarten
Our preschool and nursery area is located on the first floor of the building closest to Prince Avenue. From 9:45-10:45am, children are invited to join us for Sunday school. We have four Sunday school classes in our preschool area: Bed Babies, Toddlers and Two’s, Three Year Olds, and Pre-K4’s & Kindergarten.
Extended Session: Birth-Kindergarten
An environment of supervision and learning is provided during our worship hour for children, birth-Kindergarten. During Extended Session, children age thee and under are divided into the same age groups named above and utilize the same space.
Our Pre-K 4’s and Kindergarten children attend the first 15 minutes of worship each week with their parents/family before returning to their room for Extended Session. Included in our church vision is the participation in worship of all in our congregation, including our children. This brief time in worship provides for a gradual introduction and orientation to worship. This also helps communicate to our larger church family the value and importance of our ministry with children.
The Pre-K 4’s and Kindergarten children leave worship at the appointed time in the service with their extended session leaders (at the pulpit side door) to return to the preschool area as a group. Parents are encouraged to sit at or near the front of the sanctuary (this way children can see better, and be closer to the door for exiting). Children will have their snack when they return to their room, followed by a brief story time. Children will then have opportunity for center play & learning.
Please note: Beginning August 6, and until we are able to return to our renovated worship space in the Sanctuary, we will offer two services on Sunday mornings. Worship will be offered at 8:30 a.m. and at 11:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Child care will be provided for children birth – 3 years old during our 8:30 a.m service. PreK – 6th grade children will attend the early worship service with their families. At the 11:00 am service there will be child care for children birth – 3 year olds and Children’s Worship for children PreK through Second Grade.
First Baptist Church provides a graded choir program for children on Wednesday evenings for ages three through sixth grade. Our experienced and gifted choir teachers, helpers, and accompanists utilize the Celebrating Grace curriculum for children’s choirs, a dynamic and effective material. In children’s choir, our children learn how to express their love for God through singing, listening, moving, and playing instruments. The children’s choirs meet from 5:45 – 6:30 pm.
Brownie Bear Preschool Choir: Age 3 – Pre-K 4’s children
Music Makers: Kindergarten – Grade 2 children
Joyful Singers: Grade 3 – Grade 6 children
Mission Kids is an opportunity for children to learn about missions in our community and our world. The children hear about various missionaries, learn about different cultures and tradition, discover the work of mission in our own city and church, and to listen for how God is calling them to daily serve others in love. We use SPARK, the missions education material published for elementary children by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Mission Kids meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:15 pm following children’s choirs. The children are grouped as follows:
Kindergarten and Grade 1
Grade 2 and Grade 3
Grades 4, 5, and 6
FBC Athens is fortunate to have a dynamic, committed, and highly experienced childcare staff. Our Nursery Supervisor is Jean Hall, who does an excellent job supervising our six person staff. Our nursery staff provides a warm, safe, environment in which children may experience God’s love and care. Nursery care is provided during Sunday school, worship, and Wednesday night activities. Nursery care may also be provided for special events throughout the year. If you are wondering if childcare will be provided for a special event, please contact the church office for childcare scheduling information.
All FBC children’s ministry events and adult volunteers comply with our church’s Child and Youth Safety and Protection Policy. Volunteers are asked to complete a background check release form and include a copy of a valid driver’s license when submitting a release form.
Child dedication is a special tradition in the life of FBC Athens during which we celebrate the birth of a new child into our church family and promise to love and nurture this child in the Christian faith. Child dedication is a time when our congregation remembers the commitment it has made to every child and youth in our church—a commitment to provide opportunities for worship and spiritual growth, a commitment to celebrating each child as a precious and unique gift from God, and a commitment to pray for our children as they grow in faith.
Child dedication is done during worship at 11:00 am and often takes place when a child is between 4-7 months of age. If you or someone you know has questions about baby dedication, please feel free to contact our ministers, our Children’s Ministry Team leader, or our preschool director.
